Faith Hill’s biggest song ever, Breathe, was written by two female writers, Holly Lamarr and Stephanie Bentley. I was friends with Holly. She called me, one afternoon, really excited, and said, “Hey Missi, I’ve got to come by your office and play you the song that Stephanie and I just demoed. I think there’s really something to this for Tim.” So, I said, “Okay, sure. Come on by.” I waited around even though I was getting ready to leave for the day. They came by around 5:30 or six o’clock and played me the song. I know there was something there and said I’d play it for Tim.
When we lived over at the house in Brentwood, Byron had his studio in the house. Tim would often come over and record vocals or listen to overdubs. So, the next time Tim was at our house, I called him to the car and said, “Hey, I want to play you this song, I really like. It was just pitched to me.” Tim came out, sat in the car and I played it for him. He said, “Oh my gosh I love it, but I really don’t think it’s me. I think you really need to play this for Faith.”
We played it for Faith, and she immediately connect with it. So even though I originally pitched it for Tim, it ended up on the pop charts and was a huge hit for Faith. It sold millions of albums and became song of the year. Byron got a Grammy for it. I’m not sure but maybe it was single of the year. “Breathe” won a lot of awards. It was a big one for us.
