So, I started looking for songs for Keith Urban probably about four years ago. I was pitched “Blue Ain’t Your Color.” I honestly cannot remember who actually pitched it to me. I do remember I was at home; it was a snow day, the girls were home from school, and a lot of times I like to just go to the computer and listen to songs, about 50 to 60 a day.
That particular day, the girls were running around the house like crazy. I was in the kitchen; I clicked on the song and was immediately drawn to it. I always like to listen to songs multiple times before I send it to an artist. I’ll listen to a new song probably five or six times before I feel good about sending it to the artist. “Live Like You Were Dying” was one exception because I just was like, “I got to get this to Tim ASAP because this song is going to go on hold by someone else.”
But for “Blue Ain’t Your Color,” I listened maybe six more times before I sent it to Keith, because after the sixth time, I was just like “what the heck, I’m just gonna go ahead and send it to him.” I had just started working for Keith at the time, so I was very precious about really liking what I sent him. I didn’t want to start out working relationship by just sending him songs I didn’t think were really special and perfect for him. I had to listen to it six times and know I still loved it as much as I did the first time I heard it.
So, I sent it to Keith and said, “I’m not sure if this song is for you but there’s just something about it that I really love. Keith has always been great about responding quickly. He got back to me right away and said, “I love this.” So, we held it, went in, and cut it. I don’t think any of us knew at the time just how big a song it was going to be Keith, but it‘s probably Keith’s biggest hit.
